Daejeon's best-known bakery sits in a neighborhood worth exploring beyond the bread counter. Around Sungsimdang's main store in Eunhaeng-dong, shopping streets lead toward the overhead screens of Skyroad, the open banks of Daejeoncheon, and Central Market on the station side of the stream. Together, they make an easy-to-adapt old-downtown outing without a rental car. Decide whether shopping or wandering comes first. A few pastries are easy to carry, but several gift boxes or a cream cake can change the rest of the day. If a particular product is the main reason for coming, prioritize the bakery. If you want to explore freely, save the larger purchases until you are ready to leave. This is a lively commercial neighborhood, with shops, cafés, and people meeting in the streets. It works especially well for a food-focused afternoon or a city stop before an onward train, provided you leave enough time for shopping lines as well as the walk back.

Arrive on the Right Side of Daejeon Station

From Daejeon Station, head toward the west plaza for the old downtown. Central Market lies between the station and Daejeoncheon, with Eunhaeng-dong across the stream. Starting here lets you explore the market first and continue toward the bakery and shopping streets. For a more direct approach to Sungsimdang's main store, use Jungangno Station on subway Line 1. Search for the main store specifically when navigating. The Sungsimdang inside Daejeon Station is a separate branch, useful for travelers who want to buy bread without making a downtown excursion. Keep luggage in mind before choosing your route. A suitcase or several bakery boxes makes stairs and busy crossings less convenient. If you need step-free access, check station elevator locations and the surface route rather than following the shortest underground connection automatically. Also check the railway station printed on your onward ticket. Daejeon Station and Seodaejeon Station are different places. A route ending conveniently at the former will not deliver you to a train departing from the latter.

What to Buy at Sungsimdang

Sungsimdang began in 1956 as a small steamed-bread shop near Daejeon Station. Today, its downtown stores specialize in different products, so identify the right shop before joining a line. The main bakery, Cake Boutique, and Siru cake specialty store have distinct locations and shopping arrangements. Two signature choices offer a useful introduction. Twigim soboro combines a crumb-topped bun, sweet red-bean filling, and fried dough. Bomunsan Meari is a rolled, layered pastry with a very different texture. Choose something to eat soon and something to share later, rather than buying every familiar name on a recommendation list. As checked on October 12, 2026, the official main-store hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Cake Boutique closes at 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The Daejeon Station branch lists 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. These are store hours, not the customer-service hours shown elsewhere on the website; check the relevant branch notice if your visit depends on an early opening or late arrival. Product availability is separate from opening hours. Allow time to enter, choose, pay, and collect any packaged order before committing to a train departure. With a specific cake in mind, confirm which store sells it and follow that store's current queuing instructions. Look Up on Euneungjeongi Street

Skyroad stretches above Euneungjeongi Cultural Street as an LED canopy. The attraction is experienced from the shopping street below, with changing images overhead and storefronts on either side. Individual programs vary, so the full evening window should not be read as one continuous show. When you stop to watch, move out of the main flow of pedestrians. A café or dinner nearby makes it easy to stay in the area without spending the whole visit waiting beneath the screen. If you want to browse Central Market too, do that earlier; its individual shops do not all keep the same evening hours.

Take a Break at Mokcheokgyo

Mokcheokgyo crosses Daejeoncheon between the station area and Jungangno. Leaving the close-packed shops for the bridge opens up the view along the water and makes the neighborhood's layout easier to understand. It is also a useful landmark when turning back toward Central Market or the station. You can enjoy the stream from street level without adding a longer riverside walk. If you do go down to a path, choose a convenient exit for your next destination. During heavy rain or a path closure, stay on the surface sidewalks. Although the shopping district includes covered sections, the entire route between the bakery, stream, and market is not sheltered.

Browse Central Market's Smaller Lanes

Daejeon Central Market is a collection of markets and lanes rather than a single building. Streets between the station and stream specialize in different goods, including dried fish, tools, clothing, traditional dress, and food. Start along a main passage, then choose a side lane that interests you.

The covered passages branch, so use a named entrance or a recognizable junction as a meeting point. Looking around the everyday stalls can be as interesting as finding a particular snack. For a meal, choose by the menu and available seating; if you have already bought several pastries, consider how much more food you actually want. Opening hours and days off vary by shop. A special night market or festival is separate from ordinary trading, and an evening visit may miss businesses that were open earlier. For broad market browsing, walk from Daejeon Station through the market in daylight, cross Mokcheokgyo, and spend the later part of the day in Eunhaeng-dong. If the bakery is your priority, reverse that direction and finish closer to your train.
