Nambu Market is an easy next stop after Jeonju Hanok Village, especially when it is time to eat. Beyond Pungnammun Gate, covered lanes lead past restaurants, roasted-seaweed shops, groceries, and everyday household goods. Upstairs, the Youth Mall brings a smaller-scale mix of independent shops and places to sit, while the weekend night market adds food stalls to the evening. Those are three different reasons to visit, with three different rhythms. Come during the day for the working market and a restaurant meal. Add the Youth Mall when its individual businesses are open. Choose Friday or Saturday evening if the night-market stalls are your main interest. Nambu fits naturally into a walk around the western edge of the Hanok Village. Jeondong Cathedral and Gyeonggijeon are nearby, with Pungnammun providing a clear landmark on the way. If you arrive at Jeonju Station or one of the bus terminals, allow for a separate bus or taxi journey into this part of town.

The east-entrance image dates to August 2024. Use the market sign and arcade as orientation clues, not as proof that every pictured shop still trades or offers the same menu. Pungnammun is the surviving southern gate of Jeonju’s old city walls. Its stone base and arched passage support a timber gatehouse with layered roofs. Markets grew outside gates where people and goods passed between the town and the surrounding countryside, and Nambu still makes that relationship easy to see. The present gate reflects rebuilding after an 18th-century fire. Look at the changing width of the upper and lower stories and the carved details beneath the roof, then step back to appreciate the whole structure. Roads surround the gate, so use the crossings to reach the market side. Pick a specific entrance as a meeting point if your group splits up; the market has several access points and branching lanes. A first circuit along the main arcade helps locate the restaurants and the signs for the upstairs Youth Mall. Leave a little time for the non-food shops. Baskets, cooking vessels, wooden utensils, produce, and other practical goods reveal the market’s continuing role in local life. The food is a strong draw, but the stalls around it make this more than a collection of restaurants.

What to eat: blood sausage or bean-sprout soup?

Pisundae is one of Nambu Market’s distinctive foods. This Korean blood sausage uses pork blood with vegetables and meat in a pork casing, producing a softer, richer filling than the glass-noodle-heavy sundae common elsewhere. Knowing the ingredients makes it much easier to decide whether it is the meal you want. You can order sliced sausage on a plate or look for sundae-gukbap, a soup-and-rice meal with sausage and other pork ingredients. The plate is useful for sharing; a bowl of soup is a straightforward seated meal. Chives, sometimes called sol locally, and a tangy chili dipping sauce are familiar accompaniments. Taste the broth before adding more seasoning, and ask which meats are included if you want a particular combination. Kongnamul-gukbap, bean-sprout soup with rice, is another Jeonju specialty. The Nambu Market style uses toryeom, warming the rice and sprouts by repeatedly ladling hot broth over them. A small bowl of softly cooked egg and roasted seaweed may accompany the soup. You can try them alongside it or follow the restaurant’s suggestion for combining them. Bean-sprout soup is not automatically vegetarian: the broth commonly includes anchovy, and toppings vary. If you avoid animal ingredients, ask about the stock and toppings as well as the main ingredient. Choose between a full meal and a snack-focused visit before committing to several orders. If you want a sit-down soup meal and a good look around the market, lunchtime works well. If sampling the evening stalls is the priority, leave some appetite for them rather than treating a large restaurant meal as an obligatory first step.

Find the Youth Mall upstairs

The Youth Mall occupies former storage space on the market’s second floor. Follow its signs from the ground-floor lanes; it is easy to miss if you stay only with the main food arcade. Small storefronts, individual displays, and places to eat or drink give the upstairs area a different scale from the market below. The city’s guide describes a mix of illustrated goods, independent books, handmade accessories, craft activities, and food businesses. The appeal is in browsing the shops that interest you, rather than expecting a fixed lineup of tenants. If a particular maker or restaurant is the reason for coming, use that business’s current information before planning around it. As checked on October 12, 2026, the official Youth Mall guide lists Monday as the regular closing day and emphasizes that individual shop hours differ. An afternoon on another day is generally easier to combine with downstairs browsing than arriving early for breakfast and expecting the upstairs shops to be open. The rooftop Sky Garden provides an outdoor pause with a view toward Jeonjucheon Stream. If stairs are difficult, ask about the available access route when you arrive; the ground-floor market and restaurants still offer plenty for a shorter visit.

The stream and the weekend night market

Jeonjucheon runs along the market’s southern side. After the close-set lanes, its open banks offer a change of pace. A short walk near the market works well after eating; a longer route needs a chosen bridge and return direction so you do not end up far from your accommodation or parked car. The city’s current night-market listing, checked October 25, 2026, gives Friday and Saturday hours of 5–11 p.m., while the city's May 2026 feature and a recent Korea Tourism Organization article list a midnight finish. Because these official pages disagree, do not count on the final hour: confirm your date with the market association at 063-284-1344, especially if arriving late. On an operating night, walk through once before ordering. Grilled items, savory pancakes, fried snacks, and sweets offer different ways to assemble a meal, and it is easier to judge portions when you have seen the choices. For a group, choose a meeting point before joining separate lines, especially if people will return carrying hot food. During heavy rain or a path closure, stay on the higher street-level route rather than descending to the riverside. For an evening combining the Hanok Village and market, finish the historic-site interiors earlier, visit the shops you care about while they are open, and return for the food stalls. That sequence lets each part of Nambu Market fit its own opening pattern. Jeondong Cathedral Is a Separate Nearby Stop

If your route continues from Pungnammun toward the Hanok Village, Jeondong Catholic Cathedral offers another architectural stop. This exterior photograph dates to April 2023. It is a separate religious site, not part of the market; respect services and events, and check current permission for entry and photography.
