Gosodong adds height and a little historical depth to a walk around Yeosu's waterfront. Above the downtown streets, painted lanes wind between homes, cafés look out across the harbor, and Gosodae shelters old memorial stones associated with Admiral Yi Sun-sin. It is a neighborhood to explore at walking pace, with the sea appearing between roofs rather than filling every view. The slope is the first thing to plan for. Although the waterfront is close, these are hillside lanes with stairs, inclines, and occasional traffic. Choose a few priorities, such as Gosodae, a viewpoint, and a café, instead of assuming that every mural section belongs on one short circuit. Jinnamgwan, Yi Sun-sin Square, and the Jongpo waterfront all provide approaches to the area. Pick a starting point that also makes sense for the finish: back toward the square for a meal, down toward the sea for an evening walk, or into the downtown shopping streets.

The neighborhood's appeal comes partly from its ordinary fabric. Low houses sit at different levels, roads turn between them, and a short staircase can reveal an entirely new angle on the city. The murals add color and stories to those streets, but the lanes remain part of a residential district. Officially known as Goso Angel Mural Village, the route includes themes drawn from Yeosu's sea, local life, and history. One section features work associated with Huh Young-man, the cartoonist born in Yeosu. You can enjoy the characters and changing themes without trying to find every panel on the map. For a history-led approach, start near Jinnamgwan and follow the signs toward the mural lanes and Gosodae. The entrance from Yi Sun-sin Square includes a long staircase. If steps are difficult, compare the available approaches before setting out; a short line on the map does not tell you how much climbing it contains. Parking among the lanes is awkward. The city's visitor guide recommends using public parking around the square, Jinnamgwan, or the passenger terminal and exploring on foot. Arriving by taxi can reduce part of the climb, but the final approach to a particular café or mural may still include steps. Once inside the neighborhood, use its maps and signs rather than treating every staircase as a through-route. A lane may end at a home. Keep photographs focused on the artwork and public streets, and allow the people who live here to move in and out without having to pass through a long photo session.

Gosodae offers a quieter historical stop among the mural lanes. Inside its protective pavilion are memorial inscriptions, including a monument celebrating Yi Sun-sin's naval victories and Tarubi, a stone erected by his men in remembrance of him. Their dates and purposes are different. The naval-victory monument was erected in 1615; Tarubi dates to 1603, five years after Yi's death. One records public achievement, while the other expresses the memory held by the people who served under him. That distinction gives you something to look for even if you cannot read the classical Chinese inscriptions. Begin with the pavilion itself, then use the interpretation to identify the stones. Their bases, carved tops, and closely set characters make a more intimate form of commemoration than a large statue in a square. View them from the permitted area; the protective building is not an invitation to open barriers or doors. As checked in October 2026, Yeosu's official English neighborhood guide lists Gosodae hours of 9 a.m.–6 p.m., shortened to 9 a.m.–5 p.m. from November through February. Give it a place in the daylight part of your walk if the memorials are a priority. The surrounding streets and the enclosed heritage site do not share one opening schedule. If you have already visited Jinnamgwan, Gosodae extends the story from a former official naval site to the later remembrance of its best-known commander. You can connect the two without turning the afternoon into a detailed military-history tour.

From the higher lanes, the harbor appears in layers: nearby roofs, the water beyond them, bridge towers, and hills across the channel. Cable cars may cross the wider scene. Seeing a station or bridge from above does not mean its entrance is just around the next corner, so keep those visits separate from this walk. Opodae Park is an option for a public viewpoint. The city's guide identifies it as a high point in the mural neighborhood, with an outlook over Yeosu. It gives you a reason to climb even if a café stop is not part of your plan. For a café, consider the approach as well as the advertised view. On a hill, the entrance can be on a different side or level from the one you first see. If a rooftop is the attraction, ask about stairs or an elevator before committing to another climb. Once you find somewhere comfortable, allow time to enjoy it instead of crossing the neighborhood repeatedly between cafés. A terrace brings you closer to the wind and harbor sounds; an indoor seat offers more shelter, with the view depending on its position. Neither guarantees the exact composition seen in a promotional photograph. Part of Gosodong's character is the city in the foreground, so roofs and neighboring buildings can be part of the pleasure rather than something to edit out.

Jinnam Shopping Street provides a different finish from the hilltop lanes. Here, storefronts and signs replace residential walls, and you can browse everyday shops or find something to eat. It is a useful reminder that central Yeosu is more than its cafés and waterfront attractions. For an evening by the water, descend toward Jongpo Marine Park instead. Choose Hamel Lighthouse or Yi Sun-sin Square as the next endpoint, depending on where you want to finish. After the climb, a shorter section of the promenade may be enough. Rain makes the sloping pavement and stairs less appealing, while summer heat can turn repeated uphill detours into hard work. Adjust the route rather than feeling obliged to complete all the mural sectors. Travelers using a stroller or mobility aid should weigh the hillside access carefully; the flatter waterfront is a different kind of outing. A good Gosodong walk can be quite selective: a memorial site, a few lanes where the sea opens into view, and somewhere to rest before heading down. The changing height, and the way Yeosu's houses sit above its harbor, are what make this neighborhood worth the climb.
