Mokpo Peace Square: A Waterfront Walk, Gatbawi, and the Sea Fountain

Peace Square is a place to spend an evening beside the water. The promenade gives you room for a stroll after dinner, a seat facing the sea, and, on scheduled nights, a performance by Mokpo's Dancing Sea Fountain. Instead of climbing above the harbor, you stay close to water level and watch the city settle into its evening rhythm. This waterfront belongs to the Hadang side of Mokpo, away from the old downtown around Mokpo Station and the Bukhang cable-car terminal. Plan a separate bus or taxi journey if you are moving here after a day in those areas. Once you arrive, the square's surrounding restaurants and cafés make it easy to combine dinner with a coastal walk. For a fuller afternoon and evening, start with the Mokpo Natural History Museum, continue to Gatbawi, then walk toward Peace Square for a meal and a fountain performance. That order puts the indoor visit before its closing time and leaves the open waterfront for later. If you only want a relaxed evening out, stay around the square and make the length of your walk a choice you take as you go.
Follow the Coast Toward Gatbawi

The waterfront connection between Peace Square and Gatbawi lets the setting change gradually. Broad open sections give way to a more curved shore, small boats, and the rocky edge near the landmark. Check the route before setting off, especially if you want to walk one way and leave by taxi or bus instead of returning along the same shore. The square and the walkway in front of Gatbawi are different kinds of spaces. Around the square, it is easy to pause and spread out. At the rocks, visitors share a narrower route that extends over the water. If using a stroller or mobility aid, check the entrances, slopes, and current access conditions for that particular section rather than assuming the entire coast is identical. An afternoon walk works well if you want to see the rocks in natural light before dinner. On a warm day, the exposed shoreline can feel quite different from a shaded inland street. In the evening, the wind off the water may make a café stop more appealing than another long stretch of walking. Plan the return around where you will finish, not simply where you started.
Gatbawi in Daylight and After Dark

Gatbawi's two weathered rocks are easy to remember once you see their broad caps and hollowed faces. Their name evokes figures wearing traditional Korean hats. Look closely in daylight and the smooth outlines give way to small cavities, rough surfaces, and the layered effects of weathering at the water's edge. The pedestrian walkway allows you to see the seaward side without taking a boat. Part of the structure floats, moving with the tide, so the experience is different from walking on a fixed pavement. Stay on the visitor route to appreciate the formations; the rocks themselves are protected natural heritage. During strong weather or maintenance restrictions, use only the sections open to visitors.

After sunset, lighting emphasizes the shapes and casts reflections across the water. Choose daylight for the stone's natural color and detail, or an evening visit for the illuminated shoreline. You do not need to fit both into a short stop: either gives the rocks a distinct character. The city's lighting information, checked October 12, 2026, lists Gatbawi's decorative lighting from sunset to 11 p.m., subject to changes for events or weather. Walkway access and safety lighting have their own arrangements. These are also separate from the fountain's performance times, so allow for travel between the two places rather than expecting one evening schedule to cover everything.
Make Time for the Natural History Museum

Mokpo Natural History Museum, in the Gatbawi cultural district, is a useful daytime companion to the waterfront. Fossils, minerals, and biological specimens offer something different from the outdoor views. Its locally significant dinosaur-egg nest fossil, excavated on Aphaedo, connects the larger story of natural history to this part of Korea. For families, begin with the subjects that genuinely interest the children, whether dinosaurs, insects, or animals. A focused visit is more satisfying than trying to hurry through every room before the evening walk. Special experiences and screenings can have separate schedules or charges, so check a particular activity if it is central to your plans. The city's visitor information, checked October 12, 2026, lists regular museum hours as 9 a.m.–6 p.m., with entry ending at 5 p.m. Mondays are closed; check holiday arrangements before traveling. Arriving comfortably before the cutoff leaves time to enjoy the galleries instead of using the museum only as a brief wait for sunset. Do not confuse this museum with Mokpo Children's Sea Science Museum on Samhakdo. That is a separate destination requiring an additional transfer. For a half-day focused on Gatbawi and Peace Square, selecting one nearby cultural attraction keeps the route manageable. Dinner around Peace Square can follow the coastal walk, with enough time to reach the waterfront before any show you want to see.
When Does the Dancing Sea Fountain Perform?

The Dancing Sea Fountain uses water jets, music, and colored light to turn the sea in front of the square into a performance space. A broad view of the whole installation is usually more rewarding than concentrating on a single jet. The changing heights and patterns are part of the choreography, with reflections extending the scene across the water. The city's published 2026 regular schedule runs from April through November, with Mondays off. In April–May and September–November, performances are listed at 8 and 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday; Friday and Saturday add a 9 p.m. show. In June–August, three evening shows are listed from Tuesday through Sunday. This schedule was checked October 12, 2026; consult the official sea-fountain notice for your date because weather or operational changes can cancel a performance. Special events may add other elements, but fireworks and large festival productions are not part of every ordinary fountain visit. Choose a regular performance if the music-and-water display is what interests you, and check a specific event announcement if you want something beyond it. On a non-performance evening, the promenade and surrounding restaurants still make a simple waterfront outing. If the fountain is your main reason for coming, choose an operating date first, then build the museum visit, Gatbawi walk, and dinner around it. Leave your onward trip toward the station or hotel after the show, with room for the extra movement of people leaving the waterfront together.
