Oedo is a garden with the sea built into almost every view. Clipped hedges descend in terraces, white statues stand among palms and flowering plants, and distant ridges appear beyond the railings. Arriving by boat makes the transition especially enjoyable: first the coastline from the water, then paths winding uphill through a carefully planted island. Many excursions combine Oedo Botania with Haegeumgang, a group of dramatic rocky formations off Geoje’s southern coast. The pairing works because the experiences are so different. At Haegeumgang, you stay aboard to see cliffs and sea caves. On Oedo, you disembark for a timed garden visit. Make this the main event of a half-day rather than a brief stop between road-trip sights. It suits travelers who enjoy gardens, photography, and a short cruise, provided they are comfortable with a boat journey followed by slopes and stairs.

Oedo has no road connection to Geoje. Excursion boats leave from several ports, including Jangseungpo, Jisepo, Wahyeon, Gujora, Dojangpo, Haegeumgang, and Dadae. Compare the departure point with your accommodation and the rest of your route. Once booked, navigate to that operator’s ticket office. Read the itinerary closely enough to confirm that it includes landing on Oedo. A Haegeumgang sightseeing cruise can be a boat-only trip. Also check whether the quoted price includes garden admission or whether you buy that ticket at the port when collecting your boarding pass. Arrival procedures are worth settling in advance. Haegeumgang Cruise instructs passengers to reach its ticket office at least 30 minutes before departure, bring identification for everyone, and obtain a physical boarding ticket. That deadline is for the ticket office, so add parking or the walk from your drop-off point. For international visitors, bringing your passport is the simplest starting point. Check the operator’s accepted documents for children or anyone using an alternative form of identification. Keep the reservation name, port, and departure time together so everyone in the group is working from the same details.

Haegeumgang’s cliffs rise steeply from the sea, with trees and scrub clinging to the upper slopes. From farther away, the formation looks like a solid mass. As the boat changes position, narrow gaps, isolated rocks, and deep cuts in the cliff become easier to distinguish. Sipjadonggul, often translated as the Cross Cave, is one of the best-known features. Close approaches depend on the sea and the captain’s judgment. The pleasure is in seeing how water has cut into the rock; a particular passage into a cave should be treated as conditional rather than the deciding promise of the trip. The Dojangpo operator’s FAQ, checked October 12, 2026, explains that rough conditions around Haegeumgang may lead to an Oedo-only route. Other conditions can prevent sailing or docking altogether. Check the notice for your own departure, and distinguish a changed route from a fully canceled trip. Give yourself time to look as well as photograph. The broader view shows the wooded crest, pale rock faces, and blue water together, while a close-up catches the fractures and openings. Follow crew instructions about where passengers may stand during the cruise.

The walk on Oedo rises away from the landing. At the Venus Garden, sculpted hedges, white figures, and a colonnade create long, deliberate lines toward the sea. The formal layout is part of the attraction: it gives the planting a shape that remains interesting even between the main flowering seasons.

Oedo was developed over decades by Lee Chang-ho and Choi Ho-suk, who turned earlier, unsuccessful farming ventures into a garden project. Knowing that background adds something to the walk. The terraces, sheltering trees, paths, and buildings represent years of work on an island exposed to sea winds, rather than a landscape installed all at once. Beyond the formal garden, the route changes character through flower beds, bamboo, and wooded stretches. The garden’s own map identifies the Benvenuto Garden and Bamboo Road, useful names to look for as you follow the circuit. Pick a few places to pause instead of trying to make every corner a photo stop. Fans of Winter Sonata may recognize Lee House, used in the drama’s final episode. It remains a private residence, so the building’s interior is not part of the visit. Enjoy the outside and its setting within the garden. The official garden map distinguishes the house from the public garden areas.

Before leaving the landing, note your boat’s name and return time. Dojangpo’s published itinerary allows about two hours on Oedo and requires passengers to return on the same vessel. Use the time announced on your particular excursion rather than the island’s general closing time. Two hours can accommodate the garden circuit and short pauses, but it is less generous if you want a long café stop or walk slowly on stairs. Look at the route map on arrival and leave a comfortable margin for the descent to the landing. The café, viewpoints, and shop are choices within that time, not separate appointments you have to complete. Mobility planning needs to cover both boarding and the garden. Oedo has slopes and steps, and the ability to bring a folding stroller or wheelchair does not establish access to the whole route. Ask your operator about boarding support and contact the garden about the areas you can reach with your equipment. Published sources differ on rental availability, so arrange what you need before arrival. If your group splits up, agree on a meeting place and time well before boarding. A photograph of the boat’s name is more reliable than remembering its color among several similar excursion vessels.

Plan meals on Geoje and leave the afternoon flexible

Oedo’s visitor rules prohibit bringing food into the garden and designate the island as smoke-free and alcohol-free. Plan your main meal before sailing or after returning to Geoje. A drink or snack from an open island outlet can fit around the walk, but this is not a place to unpack a picnic. Pet access also needs attention before booking. Dojangpo states that ordinary pets cannot travel on its boats or enter Oedo, with an exception for guide dogs. If traveling with an assistance dog, discuss the boarding arrangements with the carrier in advance. After the cruise, keep the next stop near your departure port. Dojangpo pairs naturally with Windy Hill, while Gujora offers the village and nearby beach. That gives you a relaxed finish without spending the rest of the day crossing Geoje by road. The best reason to combine Oedo and Haegeumgang is the change of scenery within one outing: raw cliff faces from the boat, then planted terraces above the sea. Once the port and return sailing are settled, there is plenty to enjoy without adding a crowded schedule around them.
