Jeongdongjin is one of the rare places where arriving by train feels like part of the sightseeing. The railway runs beside the sea, with beach walks and Sandglass Park close enough to build an outing around the station. It suits travelers who want time on the coast without spending the whole day moving between distant attractions. Sunrise is the famous draw, but a daytime visit has plenty to offer. You can walk south from the station, pause at the giant hourglass, have a meal, and return along the waterfront. For something more active, choose the rail bike or the Jeongdong-Simgok Badabuchae Trail. Those are different kinds of outings. The beach and park can fill a relaxed few hours. A rail-bike session has a booked departure, while the coastal trail requires an admission window and a plan for reaching your starting point again. Choose the activity first, then fit the rest around it. Jeongdongjin lies south of central Gangneung. If you are arriving by train, make sure your ticket actually says Jeongdongjin, 정동진. A ticket to Gangneung Station leaves an additional journey to the coast here.

The view from the station makes the geography clear: wooded slopes on one side, railway tracks through the narrow coastal strip, and open water on the other. It is an unusually scenic arrival or departure, particularly when a train journey gives way to an afternoon beside the sea. Use Korail's timetable for your travel date to establish whether your starting point has a direct service or requires a connection. Choosing the return train at the same time helps define how much you can comfortably fit into the visit. Station access for sightseeing is subject to the station's own arrangements; use the public beach approaches for your walk. A straightforward route heads from the station area toward the beach and south to Sandglass Park. You can stop for food along the way or reverse the order if you have a rail-bike booking. Leave enough time to get back through the station to your platform, rather than treating the edge of the beach as your departure point. The ship-shaped resort on the headland is a conspicuous landmark from several parts of town. Seeing it from the coast is easy to include in a walk; entering its grounds or facilities is a separate visit.

Sandglass Park turns the theme of passing time into a seaside landmark. Its giant circular hourglass stands among lawns and pines, with smaller details to notice as you walk around the grounds. The open setting makes it a convenient pause between the station and the southern part of town. The hourglass was completed in December 1999 for the new millennium. Its sand represents the passing of a full year, with the turning of the structure marking a new annual cycle. The circular outline evokes the sun, while its rails suggest time continuing onward. The park operator's explanation treats it as a symbolic outdoor work rather than an ordinary clock. Jeongdongjin's wider fame also owes much to the 1995 television drama Sandglass. You do not need to have seen it to enjoy the park, but the connection helps explain why a small coastal station became a destination. Look for the large sundial as well as the hourglass. The nearby Jeongdongjin Time Museum extends the theme into an indoor collection housed in railway cars. It has separate admission and visitor arrangements, so it is an optional addition to the public outdoor park. For visitors who prefer firmer paths to sand, the park is a useful focus. Its accessible-tourism improvements concern the park's visitor spaces; the rocky coastal trail farther south has a different terrain.

Booking the Rail Bike

Jeongdongjin Rail Bike takes you along a set sightseeing circuit beside the sea and returns to its starting area. It is a recreational ride, separate from the passenger train service. Choose a departure that leaves time for ticket collection and the walk to boarding. The operator's current FAQ, checked October 12, 2026, directs riders to the rail-bike ticket office at Jeongdongjin Station. Collect a reserved ticket at least ten minutes before departure and wait beside the office five minutes before the session. Staff then lead riders to the boarding point inside the station. Two- and four-seat bikes are available. They have electric assistance, but some pedaling is still needed, particularly on an uphill section. The ride description makes this distinction clear. Wheelchair users must transfer into a bike; wheelchairs cannot be carried on board, and riders get off briefly at a turning point. Check the full conditions before booking if you need assistance. The operator allows about an hour including movement to and from the ride, with no restroom access during it. In rain, umbrellas are not allowed while riding.

For sunrise, the important moment begins before the sun appears. Arrive early enough to find a public beach viewpoint and watch the changing color along the horizon. Cloud can hide the sun itself while still producing a striking sky, so allow time to watch rather than aiming for one exact photograph. Check the sunrise time for your date and work backward from it. A very early arrival may precede cafe and restaurant opening, while a train that reaches the town later cannot provide a dawn visit. Staying nearby the night before is worth considering if sunrise is the main purpose of your trip. The beach can feel cold in the wind, even when the daytime forecast looks mild. Choose a broad, easily reached viewing area and keep away from wet rocks in low light. Once daylight arrives, breakfast and a park walk make a gentler continuation than immediately committing to every activity. If an early start does not suit your trip, visit in daylight. The station, park, and sea remain the same compact combination, with more flexibility around meals and transport.

For close views of cliffs and rock formations, the Jeongdong-Simgok Badabuchae Trail is the stronger walking choice. Raised paths follow the foot of the coastal slopes, passing formations such as Tugubawi, or Helmet Rock. The scale and roughness of the shore give it a different character from the sandy beach near the station. The operator's route guide, checked October 12, 2026, describes a roughly 3.01-kilometer route between the Jeongdong ticket office at Jeongdong Port and the Simgok ticket office. Treat that as the one-way trail distance. A round trip doubles the walking, while a one-way visit needs onward transport from the far end. The same guide lists opening from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from April through October, with ticket sales ending at 4:30 p.m. From November through March, closing is 4:30 p.m. and ticket sales end at 3:30 p.m. Check the daily opening status before traveling: rough seas or safety work can close the trail even when the town's beach remains accessible. Use the current official entrance map for Jeongdong Port. Parking and the ticket office are not necessarily side by side, and reaching the entrance adds walking beyond the trail itself. Do not rely on an older itinerary's entrance beside the resort. The route has stairs and metal-floor sections, with no restrooms inside the walking stretch. The visitor conditions also exclude pets, with an exception for guide dogs. Use a restroom before entry and allow time for the path's changes in level. If the trail is closed or the walking is too much for your group, keep the day around Sandglass Park and the station-side beach.
