A beach morning and a tofu lunch make a good introduction to Gangneung, but the stretch around Gyeongpo has more variety than its coastline first suggests. Behind the broad sand lies a coastal lake, with a historic pavilion on one side and wetlands and the Chodang neighborhood nearby. You can move from surf to lakeside paths, then sit down to one of the city's defining foods. The three similar names are worth sorting out before you travel. Gyeongpo Beach, 경포해변, is the seashore. Gyeongpoho, 경포호, is the lake inland from it. Gyeongpodae, 경포대, is the wooden pavilion overlooking the lake. People sometimes use Gyeongpodae loosely for the wider resort area, but the map pins lead to different places. For an unhurried half day, choose the pavilion, a section of lakeside path, lunch in Chodang, and some beach time. Add the wetlands or the literary memorial park if you want a longer outing. Coming from Gangneung Station or the bus terminals, a bus or taxi to your first stop leaves more time for the interesting walking around the water. The beach works well outside swimming season. Walk the sand for open sea views or use the firmer promenade and deck approaches. The Korea Tourism Organization's accessibility guide identifies step-free access to the beachside deck and wheelchair loans at Gyeongpo Tourist Information Center. Loose sand requires a separate assessment.

Gyeongpodae was built for looking outward. Its position on a low wooded rise gives you a view across the lake, while its open sides frame the scenery between columns. The pavilion belongs to the celebrated Eight Views of Gwandong, a group of landscapes that drew poets and scholars to Korea's east coast. Spend a moment looking at the building itself as well as the view. The floor rises through different levels, an unusual arrangement designed to improve the outlook over the lake. Plaques and writings under the roof record the pavilion's long literary associations. The Korea Heritage Agency's account explains both this structure and its relocation to the present site in 1508. Getting up to the pavilion involves a climb from the lakeside area. If steps or slopes are difficult, the lower path still offers views of the building among the trees. Visitors who want to go up may prefer to do so at the start, before a longer walk and lunch. Spring cherry blossoms bring extra color to the hillside and shore, though the exact flowering period varies. At other times the appeal is the architecture and its setting: dark roof tiles against pine branches, with open water beyond. You can appreciate the pavilion without timing the trip around a festival.

Gyeongpoho is a lagoon, separated from the sea by the coastal land in between. Its reed-lined edges, birds, and wooded banks create a more enclosed landscape than the beach. Even a short lakeside walk gives the day a different rhythm from following the surf. A complete circuit makes sense if walking is the main activity. For a mixed sightseeing and food outing, use the lake as a link between selected stops. Mark the pavilion, your Chodang restaurant, and your intended beach access on the same map, then choose the connecting section. This avoids finding yourself halfway around the wrong side when lunch is approaching. Bicycle rentals offer another way to cover the lakeside. Before choosing a bike, establish where it must be returned and how long you have it. A return-to-base rental works differently from a one-way walk toward Chodang. Use the permitted cycling routes; the narrower wetland paths are a separate walking environment. The sea and lake can feel close together, but roads and designated crossings still shape the route. If you are traveling with children, the contrast between waves on one side and the lagoon on the other makes an engaging short walk without requiring the full circuit.

Gyeongpo Gasiyeon Wetland adds a closer look at the waterside habitat. Restoration here has helped bring back aquatic vegetation and habitat for birds and other wildlife. Gangneung City's wetland guide describes the project and its observation paths. Gasiyeon is the prickly water lily associated with the site's name. Other aquatic plants grow here too, including lotus and water lilies, so use the plant labels if you want to identify what you are seeing. Flowers and bird activity change with the season; the wetland is worthwhile for the mix of water, vegetation, and open sky as well as individual species. Follow the open observation paths and decks. For a longer nature-focused visit, bring binoculars and allow time to stop rather than treating the wetland as a shortcut. If food and the beach are your priorities, continue toward Chodang without adding the full wetland detour. Near the tofu restaurants, Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Park offers pine-shaded grounds and a literary connection. The park honors a writer brother and poet sister from the Joseon period. Its memorial hall and historic-house setting provide a cultural stop before or after a meal. As checked October 12, 2026, the official tourism listing gives the memorial hall's hours as 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a noon-to-1 p.m. break. It lists closure on Mondays, January 1, and the days of Seollal and Chuseok. The outdoor park has separate access, so a closed exhibition does not necessarily rule out a walk among the pines.

Chodang's tofu tradition connects the kitchen to the nearby sea: seawater or seawater-derived mineral coagulants help turn soy milk into curds. The local specialty is sundubu, soft tofu served before pressing it into a firm block. A mild preparation lets you taste the soybean flavor, quite unlike the fiery stew many travelers first associate with Korean tofu. For a gentle meal, look for sundubu baekban, 순두부백반, a soft-tofu set with rice and side dishes. Modubu, 모두부, is firmer tofu served in pieces. Dubu jeongol, 두부전골, is a shared hot pot; check the minimum number of servings before ordering. Jjamppong sundubu, 짬뽕순두부, takes the meal in a spicier direction, pairing soft tofu with a robust seafood-style soup. The Korea Tourism Organization's local food guide identifies Donghwa Garden with this style and Chodang Halmeoni Sundubu with the milder soft-tofu set. These give you two concrete starting points when comparing menus. Tofu does not make the whole meal vegetarian. Broths, toppings, and side dishes can contain seafood or meat, so ask about those as well as the tofu itself. If your main interest is the curds' flavor, try a spoonful before adding the accompanying seasoning sauce. Restaurant breaks, last orders, and waiting systems vary. If you have chosen a particular kitchen, use its meal service to set the length of your lake walk. Afterward, Gangmun or Gyeongpo Beach makes a nearby coastal finish. Anmok Coffee Street is farther along the coast and works better as a separate transfer than an automatic extension of every Chodang lunch.
