Seoul Station and Seoullo 7017: An Old Railway Hall and a Walk Above the Traffic

Step outside Seoul Station and you can watch three generations of the city working side by side: the green-domed old station, today's busy rail terminal and an elevated roadway turned into a pedestrian garden. Seoullo 7017 puts you above the buses and traffic, with a close view of the old building's roofline and the streets stretching away from the station. It's an appealing first look at Seoul, or a final walk before leaving town. The strongest combination is architecture indoors followed by the cityscape outside. Culture Station Seoul 284, the restored historic station, hosts exhibitions and cultural programs. Seoullo supplies the open-air half of the visit, with large circular planters, places to pause and routes into the neighborhoods on either side of the tracks. You can enjoy a short section without committing to a long park walk. This is also a useful stop for travelers who like seeing how a city reuses its infrastructure. The former ticket halls have become cultural spaces, while the old overpass now carries people on foot. The trains and roads around them keep the setting unmistakably urban.
Find the old station, the train terminal and the walkway separately

Seoul Station is a large interchange. KTX and other mainline trains, the airport railroad and subway services bring passengers into different parts of the complex. An exit number useful for someone on Lines 1 or 4 may be inconvenient from a distant rail platform, so first follow signs for your actual destination: Culture Station Seoul 284 or Seoullo 7017. The cultural venue's official directions recommend Exit 2 from subway Lines 1 and 4. For Seoullo, there are several entrances; the city's tourism listing includes an approach from Exit 7. Once above ground, the historic station's green dome is a helpful landmark. It isn't the building where you board a departing KTX train. If you're fitting this into a train connection, choose a short out-and-back section of Seoullo and note the terminal entrance you'll need on your return. Getting back to the station plaza isn't the same as reaching your platform. Large bags also make the outing less enjoyable; if you use station storage, allow time to retrieve them and don't assume a locker of the right size will be available. For a meeting, name a particular entrance or the front of Culture Station Seoul 284. “Outside Seoul Station” leaves too much room for people to end up on opposite sides of the complex.

Yes, especially if early-20th-century architecture interests you. The old station opened in 1925 and began its new role as a cultural venue in 2011 after restoration. Its red-brick exterior and green dome are familiar landmarks, but the interior adds a different sense of scale: tall columns, arched doorways and high ceilings designed for the movement and waiting of railway passengers. An exhibition gives you a reason to linger in those spaces. Look at how the installation uses the former station rooms, then at the building itself. The route and rooms on view depend on the program, so the experience varies from one exhibition to the next. One planning detail matters more than the usual opening hours: the building closes when no exhibition or event is running. As checked on October 12, 2026, its official visitor page lists free admission and Monday closure, with space tours operating separately according to their booking times. Check the current program before making an interior visit the main reason for your trip. The exterior remains a worthwhile stop if the galleries aren't open. If you'd like more architectural background, look for a scheduled space tour and check its language and reservation arrangements. For a visit that includes both an exhibition and evening views, see the interior first, then head up to Seoullo as daylight fades.
Which direction should you walk on Seoullo 7017?

Head east for the Hoehyeon and Namdaemun Market side, or west toward Malli-dong for neighborhood cafes and a meal. If you're returning to a train, stay with the station-view section and turn back when you're ready. These are more useful choices than treating the entire walkway as something you have to complete. The name links the overpass's construction in 1970 with its reopening for pedestrians in 2017. Large round planters divide the path into smaller spaces, bringing leaves, flowers and branches close to eye level. Plant labels reward a slower look, while gaps between the containers open onto the railway and surrounding towers. The garden changes with the seasons, but the city views are the consistent attraction. Don't expect the shade of a wooded park. Much of the elevated path is exposed to sun and wind, which makes late afternoon more comfortable than summer midday. In cold weather, a short circuit may be enough. The walkway's height also means that a place visible below isn't necessarily beside the nearest exit. Elevators provide alternatives to the stairs around Seoul Station Plaza and the Malli-dong and Hoehyeon approaches. If step-free access is important, plan both the entry and the exit and check the lifts' operating status on arrival. Connections into buildings can keep different hours from the outdoor path.

After dark, the movement below becomes the main spectacle: buses pulling into stops, streams of headlights and the illuminated windows of the rail terminal. The old station stands out against the larger modern buildings. Seoullo's position lets you take in that whole scene without needing a tower ticket or a rooftop reservation. Nearby building facades sometimes add media displays, but there doesn't need to be a special screening for the view to work. Pause where the path widens, look along the traffic lanes, then turn toward the historic station for a different composition. Keep the walking route clear while taking pictures. Seoul's official tourism information, checked on October 12, 2026, describes Seoullo as a free, continuously open pedestrian space, subject to on-site closures. That makes an evening visit flexible, though your last subway or booked train still sets the return time. For a compact outing, combine the old station's exterior with the elevated view directly in front of it. With more time, add an exhibition and continue east to Namdaemun or west to Malli-dong for dinner. Choose the finish that matches your next stop, rather than crossing the station district twice.
